Washing Cloth Diapers in a Front Loading Washing Machine
The key to washing cloth diapers is to use lots of water so they get really well rinsed, avoiding nasty detergent buildup.
Well, what if you have a front loading washing machine? The whole point of a front loader is to use less water! Can you still wash cloth diapers at home with a front loader? Of course you can!
Tips for Using a Front Loader:
- Make sure you are using the right type of detergent. Use a detergent designed for a front loading machine, use a little less than you would for regular clothes (about 1/2 - 3/4 as much), and pick one that is free of dyes, perfumes and additives.
- Rinse your poopy diapers out really well before putting in the wash, or consider using flushable liners. Give your machine less gunk it needs to get clean. A diaper sprayer is a great gadget for rinsing out your diapers right into the toilet.
- Do a cold pre-wash or run a rinse cycle first.
- Do a hot wash/hot rinse with detergent, followed by a hot wash/hot rinse without detergent.
- Make sure you are not using too much detergent, a little goes a REALLY long way.
You may be able to get away with a cold rinse, hot wash, hot rinse, 2nd rinse and be done. The thing you want is for your diapers to get rinsed out really well, so experiment with what works best for your machine, your detergent and your water conditions.
